Area Guide: The Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands: Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, Carbrera

The Balearic island chain is located in the Mediterranean Sea off Spain's Eastern shore and is one of the foremost tourist areas in the country.

The five islands are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Carbrera. Due to their climate, beaches and tourist installations, they are some of the most prestigious and attractive places to "get away from it all" in the entire Mediterranean.

The largest island, Majorca (Mallorca), is most famous for its beaches and resorts. It has towering mountains in the northeast, beautiful caves in the east, a picturesque coastline in addition to quaint villages. The port of Majorca is one of the most important in the Mediterranean. Majorca's principal city, Palma de Mallorca (or simply Palma), features a Gothic cathedral, a 14th century Bellver Castle which offers a great panorama of the area., the ancient "Lonja or market area, the Archbishops Palace and the Monastery of St. Francis.

Minorca (Menorca) has many monuments, interesting coastal towns, and beaches.

The Island of Ibiza is known for its wild nightlife, attracting clubbers from all over the world.

The smaller, calmer island of Formentera also has nice beaches.
